Stories and Games
I have been exploring story games in particular journalling games using dice and cards to provide prompts and guides for the narrative. I am interested in how a collection of prompts will generate a cohesive and, in some cases, deep rooted story. This mirrors how I approach storytelling and session building. Looking for connections that resonate with the theme of the story and the experience we create for visitors to the farm or people coming to a workshop.
I will be doing a write up of some of these however for now this is a list of some that I have tried
The Deep Forest – find it here and game play here For a long time, our monstrous home was occupied by invading humans. Now, finally, we’ve driven them off, and we’re left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to dismantle their settlements and reclaim our lands. Come Winter, a band of heroes will arrive and we might not survive the encounter. This is when the game will end. But we don’t know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, we monsters have an opportunity for healing and self-discovery in our deep forest, away from human eyes.
One Day at at Thyme – find it here and game play here One Day at a Thyme is a cozy, whimsical solo journaling game in which you play the inhabitant of a cottage in a magical world.
The Last Tea Shop – find it here and game play here You run a tea shop on the border of the living and the dead. The recently deceased visit for one last hot drink before their long journey into the Great Beyond. Time is strange here. Days and memories blur. Nobody visited yesterday—you are sure of that. Someone passed last week, but you can’t recall their face. The fog thins. A figure approaches. You stoke the fire.
Wandering Dreams – find it here and game play here During your adventure you can observe, approach, fight, and run from the denizens of this world by your choice. Explore the world using the card pulls and dice for prompts as well as information on what you are dealing with. A journal is highly recommended to track where you have been, what you have seen, and how your character is doing.
Remember the Land- find it here and game play here “Remember the Land” is a solo game where you play a traveler and cartographer who is trying to register a map of the region and its features before the land is destroyed. There is nothing you can do to save the area, but you can make sure that future generations remember its history. You have to be quick though, or you will be caught in the calamity that’s about to happen.
A Tale Before You Go – find it here and game play here A ghost, trapped in the tree planted above her grave, finds herself exploring the world when the tree is transformed into a ship’s mast. A lonely princess explores a crypt, hoping to find a new name and escape her fears. A merchant, far from home, plays a game of riddles with the guardian of a mountain pass.
