Mixing a Session

For me a session is a cauldron, a mixing bowl, a weaving There is a blend and a theme and a collection of pieces which when it works well will enhance and enrich each other and allow things to make sense. It can not be forced though otherwise it breaks and clunks to a halt.

The ingredients of this session are

  • The Story of Nyame and the Basket at the end of the Rainbow
  • Gathering flowers and blackberries from the garden
  • Creating prints by flower pounding and charcoal outlining
  • Pedalling madly on a smoothie bike to make blackberry and apple smoothies
  • Exploring the orchard and checking on the ripeness of the apples
  • Modelling clay creatures around the fire

And the mixing?

The organicarts community garden is a riot of colour at the moment. The families explored the garden with baskets gathering flower petal colours and fruit. We merrily pounded flowers and fruit between folded cotton strips to make our prints and then used charcoal (made in an earlier session) to add highlights and outlines. The group modelled with clay as the story was told around the fire. As the clay hardened and changed in colour we made fruit smoothies using the smoothie bike. Blackberries and raspberries from the garden and the last of last year’s apple juice form the smoothie. We drank the smoothies and celebrated the clay creations and breathed life into them in the same way that happened in the story. Joyous!
